New Jersey State Board of Education

Did you know that New Jersey has a student member of the State Board of Education? NJASC is proud to hace worked with the New Jersey State Department of Education (NJDOE) and the State Board of Education for over 40 years to facilitate student representation and voice at the state level!

Student Representative

Since 1976, NJASC has elected the Student Representative to the New Jersey State Board of Education, who also serves as one of our nine State Officers. The term of office for the Student Representative, as defined by the State Board of Education, is from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. Therefore, when NJASC elects its State Officers in January, the incoming Student Representative works with the current Student Representative (from the prior NJASC Board) until formally being inducted onto the State Board of Education in July.

Each month, the Student Representative reports to the State Board of Education on a topic of interest to students and also offers feedback to other State Board members on a variety of issues that affect students throughout the Garden State.

The current student representative to the New Jersey State Board of Education is (2021) State Officer Maura Baker of West Orange High School, who will serve in this position from July 2021 to June 2022. You can contact Maura to share ideas and concerns at stateboe21@njasc.net.

The next student representative to the New Jersey State Board of Education will be (2022) State Officer Lauren Knopp of Ocean City High School, who will serve in this position from July 2022 to June 2023. You can contact Lauren to share ideas and concerns at stateboe22@njasc.net.

NJASC-NJDOE Student Summits

Each January, NJASC and the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) collaborate for a Student Summit at our Winter Convention. After a preview meeting during our Fall Conference, officials from the Department of Education talked with - and listened to - the student leaders of New Jersey on a variety of issues which they selected as important.

Issues raised and discussed at our Student Summits include:

  • Career & College Preparatory Programs
  • Graduation Requirements & Standardized Testing
  • Non-Academic & Extra-Curricular Programs
  • School Based Mental Health Resources
  • School Climate & Culture
  • School Safrty
  • Social & Emotional Learning
  • State Learning Standards

We are proud to work with the Department of Education in making the Student Summit an annual feature of our Winter Convention to provide a venue for Student Voice & Advocacy!
